• You should raise your head and/or upper body - depending on what you can do and how fast you are going , it may just be a tilting your head up or it might be raising your entire upper body up out of the water at a 45-degree angle - high enough for your mouth to clear the water so you can inhale .
Exhale under the water , inhale above the water , then lay your face/upper body back into the water.
Hot Tip : Breathe Forward
Unlike freestyle , look forward when you breathe in breaststroke ,
Try to keep your chin low and your breath quick so that you don’t sink your hips .
Here’s an easy way to remember it: “Up, out, squeeze.” ( As I taught this way - Head in and Blow and head up , and Breath )
Keep repeating that phrase with each step .
You fit the breath in during the in-sweep phase of the breaststroke pull . In-sweep and head up . Extend and head down .
After you breathe , make sure you tuck your head between your arms on your glide .
Look straight down toward the bottom of the pool . Take advantage of the glide part of the stroke .
You’ll move straight forward with your body on top of the water , instead of pushing yourself mostly upward .
* At first, it might feel a little confusing . But keep practicing and you’ll get it down .
